Tenho a certeza, que por esta altura, já estão fartos de saber que sou uma grande fã da Dolly Alderton. Mas, o Ghosts, o seu primeiro romance, não foi dos meus favoritos, por isso não sabia que o seu novo livro, Good Material (um romance também), me iria agradar, mas adorei. Fiquei bastante surpresa quando percebi que a personagem principal (e narrador) era um homem. A Dolly é um ícone tão grande da energia feminina que não estava nada à espera disto, mas ela fê-lo de uma forma brilhante. Acho que só um grande escritor consegue fazer algo assim e torná-lo num livro tão identificável. Portanto, ao longo deste livro, seguimos Andy: um comediante em dificuldades na casa dos 30 que está a passar por um grande desgosto amoroso. Um desgosto que ele não viu chegar e que o apanhou desprevenido. Por isso, naturalmente, ele perde-se. E faz más escolhas. Mas, a boa parte deste livro, é que nós, como leitores, conseguimos perceber o Andy na perfeição. A Dolly fez um excelente trabalho a narrar a jornada do Andy desde estar no fundo do poço a finalmente começar a ver a luz no fundo do túnel e encontrar-se novamente. As personagens são tão credíveis e os diálogos vão desde a ser profundamente tristes a fazer-nos rir às gargalhadas (ao puro estilo da Dolly). Adorei. Fez-me lembrar o High Fidelity (mais um livro de adoro), mas adaptado aos tempos de hoje. A Dolly sabe mesmo escrever sobre relações e o mundo moderno. Sabem como as pessoas têm uma série ou um filme de conforto? Eu tenho uma escritora e é, sem dúvida, a Dolly Alderton.
I'm pretty sure that by now you know I'm a big fan of Dolly Alderton. But Ghosts, her first novel, wasn't my favourite so I wasn't sure if 'Good Material', her newest novel, would be my cup of tea but I really love it. First of all, I was very surprised by the main character and narrator being a male. Dolly is such an icon of girlhood that this caught me a bit off guard but she nailed it. I think only a very good writer could do something like this and turn it into such a relatable book. So throughout this book, we follow Andy: a struggling comedian in his 30s who's going through a terrible heartbreak. A heartbreak he didn't see coming. So, naturally, he falls apart. And makes terrible decisions. But the good part is that you can totally understand his point of view. Dolly did an amazing job of narrating his journey from going rock bottom to slowly finding himself again. The characters are credible and the dialogues go from being very sad to truly hilarious (as in the real Dolly style). I adored it. It felt like a modern version of High Fidelity (another book that I love). She really knows how to write about relationships in the modern world. You know how people have a comfort TV show, then I have a comfort writer and Dolly Alderton sure is the one.
