I'm in love with this monthly playlist. Right at the beginning of April, Noga Erez (the artist I mentioned on the previous playlist) launched her new album, and I love it. I really feel like it's something completely new, and very different from the stuff people are doing right now. I'm still very into Lana del Rey's latest album, and you can find some of my favourite songs in the playlist. As always, you can also find some older songs and, side note, the music Ball and Biscuit by The White Stripes definitely is one of my favourite songs of all time. But tell me, what have you been listening to? Anything new?

So, I don't know if you follow me on Instagram (you should tho) but a few months ago I decided to change my Instagram handle. I was thinking about it for a while, and I finally decided to do it. Just like this blog, since the beginning that my handle has been 'fashionmask'. When I first created the blog, it made sense. I don't know if you're an OG or if you just recently started following me, but in the beginning, I didn't show my face on photos, and that's why I chose that name. When I started Instagram, I used it as well and since then that it felt right. But I was starting to feel that the name didn't represent me anymore. I will keep using it here on the blog, but I now also own the Contracapa account on Instagram, and I want my personal account to be the place where you can find all of those things I like. Also, the word mask has such a negative vibe right now and it's such a heavy word that I really felt I needed to change it. And so I did. You can now find me as @helenamartins___, simple and straight to the point. It's my name, it's me, and that's exactly what you're going to find over there.

I don't know if this applies to all of you, but I'm sure some of you will relate to it. Since last year, I'm living with my boyfriend, but we went through a lockdown together for the first time. It all went smoothly, but now that I'm slowly getting back to normal life, I just realised how much I missed female energy. During the first lockdown, I was still living with my mom, so I could still have that kind of energy around, but this time I went from being with my girlfriends every week to not seeing them for almost two months. And now that I'm starting to see them more often, I just realised how good that is for me. Every time I'm with my girlfriends I feel revitalized. I feel energised, and I wasn't really aware of that before. Did you also feel this way? Let me know. And here is a hell yeah to female energy and an 'I love you' to all my friends.

Estive então a ler 'O Homem Revoltado'. Resumindo, gostei bastante. O Camus faz-me sempre pensar.

Last year, I read two books by Albert Camus ('The Outsider' and 'The Fall') and since I had another book by him in my house I decided to read it as well. It's a book completely different from the other two. I'm talking about 'The Rebel'. Against the first two which are novels, this one is a philosophical essay that treats the historical and metaphysical development of rebellion and revolution. The book is divided into three parts. The first one focus on the religious revolutions, the second one on politics, and the last one on artist revolutions. The first one was quite hard for me to read, but the last two really caught my attention. But I have to say that it's not an easy read. Definitely not something to skim through in a couple of hours. I had to put it aside to read about certain concepts and writers so I could understand what he was saying and talking about, but this can be good since I feel like I've learned a lot. He also talks about a lot of other writers that I didn't know the work of, but now I'm very curious. Summing up, I really enjoy it. Camus always makes me think. He's brilliant, and I really enjoy how he analyses different theories and his critical thinking.

"Every act of rebellion expresses nostalgia for innocence and an appeal to the essence of being."

As you probably noticed, I was a bunch of time without shooting on film. The 'film diaries' were on hold, just like the analogue photoshoots. The truth is that I wasn't really feeling, but with certain restrictions lifting, the inspiration returned, so all those categories are going to be back on the blog as well. So last weekend I went to different locations to shoot some film photos, and that just made me realize how much I love film photography and reflecting on the reasons why that happens, so here are a few of them together with some of the film photos I took. I hope you like them.

1. It's A Process

It's a whole process, and I love it. Shooting the film according to what kind of photos you're planning, taking the photos (which it's a challenge itself), delivering the film, and getting the photos. It's something that you will never get with digital photography.

2. It Takes Time

Shooting with analogue cameras can really teach you to be patient. With only a few limited amount of frames in each roll of film, you really have to be careful and think about the picture you want to take. There's no repeating and trying again. Every photo cost you money, so you really have to be patient and wait for the perfect moment to capture.

3. Improves Your Technical Skills

This one is quite related to the last one since, on the search for the perfect photo, you will have to pay attention to several technical questions. You have to pay attention to light, realize how you want to compose your photo and choose your focus point. Besides that, if you're using a manual camera, you will also have to learn all the settings (something I love doing).

4. No Need To Edit

Sempre que tiro fotografias digitais, passo sempre pelo processo de as editar, com as fotografias em analógico nunca há essa necessidade, what you see is what you get!

Every time I take digital photos, I always have to edit them, but with film photos, there's no need for that, what you see is what you get!

5. The Photos Look Amazing

And last but not least, the photos look great. Film photos are uncomparable. No preset or filter will get you the same colours and vibe as a film photo.

Usar as mesmas roupas várias vezes é a nova tendência, certo?

Rewearing clothes is the new black, am I right or am I right? I'm so glad I'm not the girl who used to buy a new piece of clothing every single week anymore. And I'm so glad that I finally have a wardrobe with clothes I truly love and that I find myself wearing them over and over again. There's nothing wrong with repeating outfits and wearing the same clothes. I think we should normalize that, so today I thought could share with you the pieces of clothing I find myself wearing and repeating over and over again.

Oversized Shirts

I think I've been wearing shirts almost every day. During Spring, shirts really are the best piece of clothing I have in my wardrobe, they're so versatile (take a look at the outfits category on the blog to see different ways to style them). My favourites definitely are the white and striped ones, I wear them a lot.

Wide-leg Tailored Trousers

Wide-leg tailored trousers are a piece that I also wear a lot. In my case, I love to pair them with more relaxed clothing and shoes to get a laidback outfit, but they adapt to any situation really.

Straight-leg Jeans

Obviously, jeans had to be mentioned. The reality is that if I'm not wearing tailored trousers, I'm probably wearing straight-leg jeans. My favourite model definitely is The Row by Weekday, they're just perfect.

Conhecem algum deles?

I don't think my reading list has ever been as long as it is right now, but, obviously, there are certain books that I prioritized. It has been a while since I last share my reading list with you so here it is (at least part of it, I don't want to bother you with an infinite list of books). Do you know any of them?

Todos os Nomes by José Saramago

José Saramago is always on my reading list, but this is the book I'm going to read next. Some of you sent me messages telling me you loved it, and it's also a book he mentions a lot on 'Últimos Cadernos de Lanzarote', so I'm very curious about it.

Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson

This is probably the most famous book on Instagram right now, but I have to confess that I'm very curious about it. It's the first book by this writer and I've been hearing only good things about his writing, so I'm going to read it very soon, for sure.

Women by Charles Bukowski

A classic that I'm missing, but I really want to read it in the next couple of months. I've never read Bukowski before, but I think it's a good book to start with it. It's a semi-autobiography book, and I really want to read it.

During the last lockdown I didn't place many orders, but the ones I did I wanted them to be at small Portuguese brands to support them during this very hard time. I found some pretty great brands that I became a fan of, and I think it makes sense to share them with you. It's important to say that nothing in this post is sponsored, these are things that I actually bought and that I genuinely like. If you know any other small brands that I should know about, let me know in the comments.

Mal vi estas malas no Instagram, achei-as super fofas.

As soon as I put my eyes on these bags, I found them very cute. A bit different from what I usually wear, but I'm really trying to wear more colour and have fun with it. These bags are handmade, and you can order your favourite pattern.

Benta

Shop: HERE

I'm completely in love with this earrings' brand. This pair in the photo are the first ones I bought, but meanwhile, I already bought another pair. The earrings are all very colourful and fun. I think they're gorgeous, and perfect to add some colour to outfits. Besides the earrings, you can also find rings at Benta.

Tarda Boutique

Shop: HERE

Tarda is not new around here. It's the brand of a very good friend of mine, and she sells vintage and second-hand clothes. However, the earrings are new. They're also handmade and with very beautiful colours and patterns.

I think this pandemic divided our society into two groups. The ones who always dress up even if they're staying home, and the ones you just get into their comfies and sweats. I belong to the latter, and even though sometimes I got dressed up during quarantine, most days I just wore a tracksuit. I believe a lot of you guys are just like me, for some reason tracksuits were a huge trend, right? So being back in my routine has been amazing. I really love the whole process of getting ready. Looking for inspiration, pick an outfit, do my hair and put on some makeup. I missed it. I know I could do it anyway, but it's definitely not the same if you're going to stay at home. It feels good to wear the clothes that I like so much and stroll around the city in them. People can say that clothes don't bring happiness, but wearing them and feel good in them can do a lot to our mood, don't you agree?

I can't believe we're in April and this is the first memoir I'm reading. As you know, it's my favourite kind of book, but I'm so glad I grabbed this book, 'The Philosopher and the Wolf' by Mark Rowlands. As I've said, it's a memoir and it charts the relationship between the writer, who's also a philosopher, and Brenin, a wolf he acquired as a cub. Obviously, being the owner of a wolf is not easy so he ends up taking the wolf everywhere with him, even to his philosophy classes. It's a book completely different from all the other memoirs I've read. It's written by a philosopher, so besides his story with the wolf, his daily life with him leads him to thoughts on human evil, the pursuit of happiness, and even what it means to be human. It's a book that stimulates us intellectually, that make us think about certain tops, and lets us take our own conclusions. Even though there's a bunch o philosophy in the book, it's really easy to read, the writting is beautiful, really easy to understand and sometimes with a bit of humour. I can't recommend this book enough, I truly loved it.

I've been hearing so many things about impostor syndrome lately. If you're not familiarized with the term, it's basically a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their skills, auto-sabotaging themselves. However, I think there's a huge difference between that and actually being aware of our own weaknesses. I actually think it can be very powerful to be aware of that and make it on the other side. I mean, let's look at myself. I know I'm no good at talking to a camera, so I don't do it on Instagram Stories. But that made me found a new way to communicate with you, I share photos and if I feel I have something else to say I add a text. For the same reason, I didn't create a podcast. It was something that was on my mind for a while. I wanted to create a podcast about feminism, and I even recorded some episodes, but I just didn't like it. I wasn't natural, and I didn't know how to share my message. Now if this is imposter syndrome, I would have to disagree. I know I'm good at creating concepts, taking photos, and even writing, but I also know I'm not good at talking to a microphone. We can't all be good at everything, some people have more aptitude for certain things and others for other things. Recognizing that there's nothing impostor about it, we just know ourselves so well that we are capable of admitting that certain thing is not for ourselves.

I've been loving to shoot with my phone, and I find myself posting more and more this kind of photos on my feed. I love mixing with photos taken with my camera, but deep down these photos are more natural, and that's exactly what I love about them. I also like to post them here, so here are some of them. I hope you like them, you can see more down below.
