Este livro já estava na minha wishlist há algum tempo, por isso, durante a minha viagem a Edimburgo, trouxe-o comigo quando o vi por apenas 3£ numa loja de livros em segunda-mão. Estou a falar do Atonement (traduzido para Expiação) do Ian McEwan. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, Briony Tallis de apenas 13 anos encontra a sua irmã mais velha a ter relações com o filho da governanta. Ela interpreta a situação de forma completamente diferente e este seu erro causa uma série de repercussões na vida de toda a gente. Este livro segue essas mesmas repercussões. Para ser sincera, não gostei. Eis o que eu acho que está errado: primeiro, como leitor, não criamos qualquer relação com as personagens porque não sabemos grande coisa sobre as mesmas. É impossível termos algum interesse, pois, apesar das descrições dos espaços físicos serem imensas, sobre as personagens já não é de todo a mesma coisa. Segundo, a história não tem um bom ritmo. Tanto é muito lenta, como é muito rápida. Por último, a história nunca chega a parecer real. Adoro quando estou a ler um livro e imagino tudo na minha cabeça e vejo realmente pessoas e não personagens. Neste livro, estas personagens nunca saem das páginas porque não parecem ser reais. Ainda vou dar uma oportunidade à adaptação em filme porque nunca vi, mas não recomendo o livro. Pelo menos, não é o meu tipo de livro. Foi uma grande decepcão.
This book has been on my wishlist for a while now so during my trip to Edinburgh I brought it with me when I saw it for only 3£ at a second-hand bookstore. I'm talking about Atonement by Ian McEwan. In World War II England, 13-year-old Briony Tallisgond the family's housekeeper. She totally misinterprets this love affair into something much worse and this mistake causes a bunch of repercussions in everyone's lives. This book follows those repercussions. I really didn't enjoy it that much. Here's what I think it's lacking: first, you don't really care about the characters because you don't know much about them. You just don't relate to them because, even though there's a lot being written about the physical surroundings, there's not much written about the characters. Secondly, I don't think it has a good rhythm. Sometimes it's way too slow, and then way too fast. Last but not least, this book never ends up feeling real. I love when I'm reading a book and I can picture everything in my head which happens almost all the time. With this book, that didn't happen. These characters just don't come alive from the pages because they don't feel real. I'm still going to give the film adaptation a go because I've never watched it before, but I really don't recommend the book. At least, it's not my kind of book. It was a big disappointment.
