Há uns tempos, estive a ler a Câmara Clara (podem ler o post sobre o livro AQUI) e um livro com o qual é muito comparado é este mesmo: On Photography da Susan Sontag. Vi-o na feira do livro e tive de o trazer comigo. Uma coleção de seis crónicas, este livro é um estudo sobre a força das imagens. É um livro que nos faz pensar sobre fotografia e sobre o ato de fotografar, algo que pode ser tão instantâneo, mas que também pode ter tanto por detrás, sem dúvida, que é um livro que nos faz pensar. Coloca importantes questões sobre fotografia e, como algumas pessoas me disseram, quase que nos faz sentir culpados com o ato de fotografar. É também engraçado ver como tanto mudou desde a publicação deste livro. Foi publicado em 1977, mas adorava saber a opinião da escritora face à fotografia digital e ao fenómeno das selfies. É um livro bastante interessante, mas senti que não caminhava para uma direção coerente, o que me fez gostar mais da Câmara Clara. Claro que se gostam de fotografia devem ler ambos, mas se estão à procura de um livro apenas para compreenderem a fotografia de uma outra forma, então recomendaria a Câmara Clara.
A while I go I read Camera Lucida (you can read my blog post about it HERE) and that book is very often compared to this one: On Photography by Susan Sontag. A collection of six essays, this book is a study of the force of photographic images. It's a book that makes you think about photography, an act that can be very spontaneous, but has so many things behind it, it's a very thought-provoking book. It raises important questions about photography, and as a few people told me about it, it almost makes you feel guilty about taking a photo. It's also fun to see how much has changed since this book was published. She wrote this in the 1970s and I would love to know her opinion on digital photography and even the phenomena of the selfie. It's an interesting book to read, but with that being said, I felt like the work as a whole lacks anything approaching a coherent direction which made me enjoy Camera Lucida much more. Obviously, if you like photography you should read both, but if you're looking for something to understand photography on another level, I would definitely recommend Camera Lucida.
