Comecei há uns dias a ouvir um novo podcast, até partilhei no meu Instagram, chamado Sentimental & The City (se gostam de Sex & The City e da Dolly Alderton têm de ouvir) e fez-me pensar na forma como as personagens podem mudar à medida que revemos certas séries e Sex & The City é o exemplo perfeito. Não me recordo que idade tinha a primeira vez que vi a série, mas eu diria que estava a entrar da dita "idade adulta", talvez uns 18/19 anos. Na altura, a minha personagem favorita era, sem dúvida, a Carrie. Acho que já todas nós quisemos ser uma Carrie, certo? Guarda-roupa fabuloso, casa ideal numa cidade fantástica e emprego de sonho. Mas voltei a ver a série no ano passado e com 24 anos consigo perceber o quão problemática esta personagem é. Constantemente à procura de validação, muitas vezes uma má amiga e nunca aprende com os seus próprios erros. Com 24 anos, a Miranda, a personagem que, para mim, quando vi pela primeira vez era a mais aborrecida, agora é a minha favorita e com a qual mais me identifico. Feminista com uma pitada de sarcasmo e super badass sem medo de dizer as suas verdades. Se esta série fosse feita nos dias de hoje, sem dúvida, que a Miranda seria a personagem principal, não concordam? É impressionante como podemos ter perspetivas tão diferentes das personagens ao longo dos anos. I couldn't help but wonder, concordam comigo?
A few days ago I started listening to a new podcast, I even shared on my Instagram, called Sentimental & The City (if you're a fan of Sex & The City and Dolly Alderton, you have to listen to it) and it made me wonder how characters change when we rewatch certain TV shows, and Sex & The City is the perfect example. I don't remember how old I was the first time I watched it, but I would say I was around 18/19 years. At the time, Carrie definitely was my favourite character. I think we all wanted to be a Carrie at some point, right? Fabulous wardrobe, the perfect house in an amazing city, and a dream job. But I watched it again last year, and with 24 I can understand how problematic this character is. Constantly looking for validation, most times a very bad friend, and never learns from her mistakes. In my 24 years, I can say that Miranda, the one I found the most boring the first time I watched it, is my favourite character and the one I relate to the most. She's a feminist, a little bit sarcastic, and a badass who's not afraid to speak her truth. If Sex & The City was made today, I'm pretty sure Miranda would be the main character, don't you think? It's amazing how we can have such different perspectives throughout the years. I couldn't help but wonder, do you agree with me?
