Como sabem, sou uma grande fã do José Saramago e, em semelhança com o que fiz neste post sobre os livros do Murakami, achei que seria interessante fazer o mesmo e partilhar quais os livros que deveriam ler se querem começar a embrenhar-se na obra de Saramago. Ainda estou longe de ter lido todos os seus livros, mas, sem dúvida, que já sei escolher quais os meus favoritos e aqueles que não podem mesmo perder. Aqui estão então três livros por onde devem começar se querem ler Saramago.
As you already know, I'm a huge fan of José Saramago, and like I did in this post about Murakami's books, I thought it would be interesting to do the same and share the books you should start with if you want to delve into Saramago's books. I'm far from reading all his work, but I already have my favourites and can tell you the ones you really shouldn't miss. So here are three books to read if you want to read Saramago.
Foi o último que li do autor e que livro espetacular. O protagonista é um homem de meia-idade, trabalhador do Arquivo do Registo Civil que parte numa busca incessante à procura de uma mulher da qual nada sabe, apenas tem o seu registo. A história é bastante cativante e o fim, ou pouco à semelhança com os outros livros que menciono, é mesmo incrível.
It was the latest book I read by the author, and it's amazing. The main character is a middle-aged man who works at the civil registry office that it's trying to find a woman he knows nothing about, only having her file. The story is very captivating but the end, just like all the books I mention, is mindblowing.
É, talvez, a sua obra mais mencionada e adorada e por alguma razão assim o é. É um livro que nos marca e tenho a certeza que já conhecem a base principal da história. Resumindo, trata-se de uma pandemia de cegueira branca que se espalha por uma cidade, afetando todas as pessoas. É, realmente, um livro que nos prende e repulsa ao mesmo tempo.
It's probably his most mentioned and loved book, and for a reason. It's a book that really makes an impression on you, and I'm sure you already heard about the main story. Summing up, it's a pandemic of white blindness that spreads all over a town, affecting everyone. It's a book that it's a page-turner but also a bit repulsive at times.
Apesar de não ser necessário ler o Ensaio sobre a Cegueira para compreender este livro, ele é quase como uma sequela do mesmo, por isso recomendo a que leiam nessa ordem, no entanto, as histórias são bastante diferentes. Neste livro, o enredo foca-se num processo eleitoral. No entanto, é um processo bastante diferente do normal, pois a maior parte das pessoas não aparece para exercer o seu direito de voto. Isto leva a uma grande operação policial para descobrir qual o culpado, o que torna o livro muito interessante.
Even though you don't have to read Blindness to understand this book, it's almost like a sequel, so I would recommend reading in that order, even though the stories are very different. In this book, the story focus on the election process. However, it's a very different process since most people don't show up to vote and that leads to a major police operation to find who started that. It's a very interesting book.
