Na minha lista de clássicos a ler, estava o 'Admirável Mundo Novo' de Aldous Huxley e foi isso mesmo que andei a ler nas últimas semanas. Passado em Londres no ano de 2540, este romance distópico antecipa grandes avanços científicos na reprodução, manipulação psicológica e condicionamento clássico, tudo isto leva a uma profunda mudança na sociedade. Lembrou-me muito o livro 1984 (podem ler a minha review AQUI), mas existe uma grande diferença entre os dois romances: neste, toda a sociedade é feliz. No entanto, é uma felicidade controlada. Ninguém tem ideias, ninguém se quer destacar. O que achei bastante interessante é que também explora problemas que vivemos nos dias de hoje, tais como o consumismo, a censura e o individualismo. É um livro brilhante, mas é difícil de ler, mas tenho a certeza que todas as distopias o são. No entanto, não é o meu tipo de livro. Eu gosto de ler histórias reais, que realmente aconteceram e, apesar de o ter achado muito interessante, não me parece que vá ler outra distopia num futuro próximo. Mas se gostam deste tipo de livros, fica aqui a recomendação. As opiniões dividem-se entre o 1984 e o Admirável Novo Mundo, mas eu, apesar de tudo, gostei mais do último.
On my classic books' list to read, I had 'Brave New World' by Aldous Huxley, and that's the book I was reading for the last couple of weeks. Set in London in 2540, the dystopian novel anticipates huge scientific advances in reproductive technology, psychologic manipulation, classical conditioning, all of these changing the society tremendously. It reminded me a lot of 1984 (you can read my review HERE), but there's a huge difference between the two novels: in this one, everyone is happy. However, this is a controlled happiness. No one has ideas anymore, no one needs to stand out. Something that I found very interesting is that exposes issues that are problematic in our time: consumerism, censorship and individualism. It's a brilliant book, but it's a difficult read, but I'm sure all dystopias are. I enjoyed it and I recommend it if you like this kind of stories, but it's not my type of book. I love to read about real stories, things that actually happened, and even though I found it very interesting, I don't think I will be reading a dystopian novel in the future. But if you enjoy this kind of books, here's another recommendation. There are a lot of opinions about 1984 and Brave New World, but I prefer the latter.
