After reading, last year, 'The Year of Magical Thinking', I really wanted to read more books by Joan Didion. I have a few written by her on my wishlist, but I decided to read 'The White Album' this time. Against the first book I read that's a memoir, this one is a collection of essays, all with something in common: life in California in the late 60s. It's a tribute to a time and place, and in some essays, you can really understand how life was back then. How everyone lived between the line of madness and coolness. From the Manson murders to the recording of The Door's third album, she jumps around the fascinating people and events of that time. I have to be honest, not all essays have a very interesting topic, in my opinion. But that's why I find Didion such a good writer. She makes the topic come alive through her writing, and that just kept me going. It didn't resonate with me the way 'The Year of Magical Thinking' did, but I still want to read more of her work.
