When I went to Berlin I took the chance to buy some books that I've been wanting to read. 'On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous' by Ocean Vuong was one of them. And let me tell you, Ocean is a brilliant writer. The prose was so beautiful, it's not surprising that he's a poet. It's a letter from a son, a young Vietnamese immigrant, to his mother, and, through the letter, he talks about race, sexuality, family and language. It's a story about a boy who tries to find his place in a foreign country, about his first love, and his relationship with his mother and grandmother. It also brings out the past of these two women. I also found it quite hard to believe it was fiction. It's such a beautiful and raw story, that seems to come from a place of truth. It's not a book for everyone, it's a very painful story, but it's also very powerful and deeply moving. Really loved it.
