Hi, my name is Helena and I'm addicted to social media. And you reading this right now also are. At least the probability is very high. And you know what? I'm not ashamed to admit it. I've been through phases that I thought that I wasn't very addicted (and when I speak about social media, I'm speaking about Instagram, it's been a long time since I gave up on Facebook and Twitter), but let's face it, when the first thing you do in the morning is to grab your phone and scroll through Instagram, it's a clear case of an addict. But why are we so ashamed to admit it? Social media is something so usual to these generations and something we've been growing with (I still can remember the golden days of Hi5) that denying we have this addiction is quite contradictory. It's part of our lives and part of the way we interact with other people. It's how we know what our friends are doing, it's how we get informed of the latest news and for some people, it's also a work tool. Of course it also has its negative aspects and if there was something I learned with the 'Why Social Media Is Ruining Your Life' book is that it can really affect our mental health, but the first step is to admit we have this addiction and the second is knowing how to control it, because to be honest, I think the addiction is always going to be with us.
